I am Eric Allman, Chief Scientist at Sendmail, Inc. and author of the sendmail MTA. I encourage the ASO AC to appoint Barry Shein to the ICANN board of directors. I’ve known Barry since the early days of UNIX and have served with him on the USENIX board of directors. I’ve discussed current ICANN issues with him and believe he has a good grasp of the complex issues facing ICANN today.

Subject: ICANN board of directors position.
From: Keith Bostic
Date: Tue, 17 Mar 2009 17:41:20 -0400
To: nom-com@aso.icann.org

To whom it may concern:

My name is Keith Bostic. I’ve been an engineer in the UNIX community for many years: I was one of the principal architects of the Berkeley 4.4BSD releases from the University of California, I was a founder of Sleepycat Software, the developers of the Berkeley DB database software, and I was the recipient of a 1993 Lifetime Achievement Award from the USENIX Association for my efforts in making the BSD releases Open Source software.

I have known Barry Shein for over 20 years. Barry possesses a deep and broad knowledge of issues surrounding the Internet, both technically and from a business perspective. When Barry served on the USENIX Association Board of Directors, he was a well-respected leader, reliable, forward-looking, and thoughtful in his views. I strongly support Barry Shein for a position on the ICANN Board of Directors.

Regards,
Keith Bostic

From: Timothy Smith
Date: Mon, 16 Mar 2009 15:48:53 -0400

Folks,

I am Timothy G Smith, Principal at Finaoe Technologies LLC and I encourage the ASO AC to appoint Barry Shein to the ICANN board of directors. I have known Barry for
since the late 80s through his work with USENIX, the Sun Microsystems User Group, NFSSTONES benchmark, his ISP business TheWorld.com, and his longstanding and frequent contributions to USENET and the IETF.

I have always found Barry to be honest, open to new ideas and the debate of old ideas, and forthright in word and deed. I think he would serve the needs of the community well and greatly contribute to the collective efforts.

Best regards,
Timothy G. Smith

Subject: Support for Barry Shein for ICANN board
From: Margo Seltzer
Date: Mon, 16 Mar 2009 06:44:50 -0400

I am Margo Seltzer, Architect at Oracle Corporation and Professor at Harvard University, and I encourage the ASO AC to appoint Barry Shein to the ICANN board of directors. I have known Barry for nearly twenty years and interacted with him regularly in his capacity as a member of the USENIX Board of Directors.

Barry would bring an enormous wealth of experience to the ICANN board. He can analyze situations quickly and draw conclusions to develop plans to move forward — he’s decisive, smart, and about as knowledgable as anyone in this domain. I regularly consult him as an expert on both technical and policy mattters regarding the Internet, naming, SPAM, security, etc.

I wholeheartedly endorse Barry’s nomination.

From: Erik Fair

I am Erik E. Fair, formerly Postmaster of Apple Computer, and co- author of a number of Internet Protocol standards and supporting documents through the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). I have been a user of the Internet for longer than it has been the Internet – that is, back to the days of NCP and the ARPANET.

I encourage the ASO AC to appoint Barry Shein to the ICANN Board of Directors. I have known Barry, personally and professionally, for two decades. I met him through the USENIX Association, at their technical conferences, and we’ve also both worked on Internet issues in IETF working groups over that time.

Barry owns & operates his own successful Internet Service Provider (ISP), which makes him experienced not only in the technical and operational aspects of the Internet, but also in its business and economic aspects.

He has also worked in academia, and so can speak from experience of that world.

He is a careful thinker, articulate, straightforward, and honest.

These qualities would make him a great asset to the ICANN Board of Directors.

From: Eliot Lear

To: nom-com@aso.icann.org

My name is Eliot Lear. I am a senior consulting engineer at Cisco Systems, and the author of several RFCs, including two on Internet Addressing. I write to you today not as an employee of Cisco, but as a senior member of the community, who wonders why on Earth you would even consider not appointing Barry Shein to the Board of Directors.

I have known Barry for over twenty years, when he ran the computing department for Boston University. He was also then on the board of the Sun Users Group (SUG), and a member of the USENIX Board, the governing body for USENIX. Barry went on to found the first commercial ISP, World.STD.COM, and to be one of the first members of the community to attempt to attack the spam problem.

Barry doesn’t toot his own horn all that loudly, and so I strongly encourage you not only to appoint Barry, but to take the opportunity to listen to some of his experiences. He is truly a remarkable man. Ask him, for instance, about the development of flavored dental floss.

Eliot

I, Kenneth D. Mandl, MD, MPH, Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School strongly encourage ASO AC to appoint Barry

Shein to the ICANN board of directors. I have known Barry for more than a decade. As founder and president of the world’s first Internet Service Provider (The World.com) offering commercial internet dial-up, Barry started out and has remained at the forefront of work and ideas about the Internet and World Wide Web. He also been a champion of the international campaign against spam. Barry would bring a breadth and depth of experience and expertise difficult to find in anyone else.

I am Marshall Kirk McKusick and I encourage the ASO AC to appoint Barry Shein to the ICANN board of directors. I have known Barry for over twenty years and among other things served with him on the Usenix Association (www.usenix.org) board of directors. Barry understands the role of a director. He is excellent at looking at the big issues and avoiding the temptation to micro manage.

Subject: Support letter for Barry Shien
From: Richard Salz
Date: Fri, 13 Mar 2009 21:34:30 -0400

I have known Barry for a remarkably long time, since we first worked together at a small startup around 20 years ago. I strongly encourageth ASO AC to appoint him to Board of Directors. He is an Internet businessman, having founded the first commercial ISP; he’s a technical guy, as shown by his ongoing involvement in early Unix and Usenix. He has a unique sense of humor that melds both camps — who else could have an initial login message from Dennis Ritchie that said “hello, world” and mean it — it’s his hostname!

He knows what he’s doing, he cuts through the crap, and generally does it without pretension and without getting too many people mad at him. That’s a rare combination. Please don’t skip this opportunity, and nominate him.

Thank you.

From: Dave Eckhardt
Date: Fri, 13 Mar 2009 21:41:27 -0400

I am writing in support of Barry Shein to the ICANN board of directors. I have known Barry since the late 1980’s and have observed him, repeatedly, in several areas of endeavor, to be the kind of guy who figures things out and gets things done.

He brings to the table:

* a keen sense of the Internet as a vehicle for human expression in the form of communities

* the perspective of operating a small ISP for just under 20 years

* connections to, and frequent dialogue with, top Internet technologists

* a deep-seated interest in ICANN serving not just its members but Internet users in general.

As the exhaustion of the IPv4 address space looms larger, I believe Barry’s perspective and input will be useful to the ASO.

I am Craig Partridge (former member of IESG, long-time Internet person, etc) and I encourage the ASO AC to appoint Barry Shein to the ICANN board of directors. I have known Barry since 1987 or so (when he and I worked together on CSNET matters) and generally have a high regard for Barry’s savvy about operational issues.

Thanks!
