Regional Policies

Each Regional Internet Registry (RIR) distributes Internet number resources to its members according to policies that defined by its regional community.

Each RIR community proposes, discusses, accepts or rejects these policies using a consensus-based, open and transparent policy development process. Anyone, anywhere can submit a policy proposal for consideration and membership of an RIR is not required.

Comparative Policy Overview

The Number Resource Oganization (NRO) publishes a Comparative Policy Overview, which offers a comprehensive overview of policies across the RIR system.

Global Policy

Global policies govern how Public Technical Identifiers (PTI), the organization charged with performing the IANA functions, issues Internet number resources to the RIRs. RIRs then distribute these Internet number resources to their members according to the regional policies developed by their respective communities. A global policy proposal must first gain consensus in each of the five RIR regions before being ratified by the ICANN Board. The ASO AC plays a role in the Global Policy Development Process (GPDP).
