From louie at equinix.com Sat Jul 12 01:31:43 2008 From: louie at equinix.com (Louis Lee) Date: Mon Aug 17 10:36:46 2009 Subject: [aso-council] ASO AC's Advice on Proposed Global Policy for Autonomous System Numbers In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <20080711233143.GA1448@nemo.corp.equinix.com> Dear ICANN Board Secretary John Jeffrey, In response to your request for advice which was communicated to us on Friday, June 20, 2008 which was specifically related to the Global Policy Proposal for Autonomous System Numbers, I respectfully submit the following advice on behalf of the ASO Address Council for consideration by the ICANN Board of Directors: On May 1, 2007, the Global Policy Proposal for Autonomous System Numbers was introduced at the first of five Regional Internet Registry meetings in Talinn, Estonia. This IANA to RIR policy formalizes the current IANA procedure and creates a policy basis for the transition from 2-byte (16 bits) to 4-byte (32 bits) Autonomous System Numbers "ASNs". This expansion allows for the increase in the size of the free pool of ASNs available for global allocation. The policy was also submitted for consideration at open RIR meetings in Venezuela, the United States, India, and South Africa. After following each region's transparent policy development process "PDP" and in accordance with the ICANN Memorandum of Understanding, its Attachments, and procedures of the ASO AC, the policy was subsequently ratified in each region and deemed to have followed each RIR's required PDP by the ASO AC on June 12, 2008. It is now on your agenda for ratification. The ASO Address Council advises the ICANN Board of Directors that the policy has been globally vetted and reached consensus in open RIR meetings held in all regions, followed each RIR's independent and transparent PDP, that the ASO AC has followed all required procedures related to the proposal, and that there are no roadblocks to its adoption. We further advise the ICANN Board of Directors to ratify this policy prior to the close of the 60 day review period as prescribed by the MoU and its Attachments, which ends on August 11, 2008.
